Leaving Instagram or Exiting the Portal of the Validation Loop
Common Shapes Season Two
Welcome to my newsletter : a portal and headquarters of all things that I do. A place to stay out of the validation loop and lean toward service and writing.
Today is my 12.5 year sober birthday and it really is a miracle just to be alive, let alone continue to bring you my creative efforts. Thank you for tuning in. I also adopted June four years ago today and it is
birthday. Today is a national holiday of all things sacred and true.We are in the midst of Season Two of my podcast Common Shapes and I’d love to talk about all the ways you can support the show as well as how the newsletter will start to provide bonus material, notion templates, and more. Check out the Creative Ideation Portal which pairs with the first four episodes of the podcast. Tune in next week for the Personal Essay Prompts notion template!
You can also text the episode to a friend, follow the show, share it on social media or in a newsletter, leave a review on Apple Podcasts, rate the show on Spotify, and as a paying subscriber you can participate in the comments section with other listeners about what you thought of the show.
This week the comments are open to all subscribers <3 This little self published project means the world to me and it is because of you sweet listeners that it finds its way to so many people.
And with that : EPISODE ONE OF SEASON TWO IS HERE and is a continuation of this newsletter installment :
Today’s material to sit with after you listen to the episode is this OFFLINE PRACTICE worksheet I created in 2017 to go along with a workshop I taught at Otherwild. Thanks to Lani Trock for texting it to me recently.
I left Instagram with 28 ,000 people subscribing to my newsletter. I absolutely do not think you need a number anywhere close to that to leave Instagram. I'm sharing my numbers as transparently as I can, but I want it to feel possible for you as well without that many newsletter subscribers. Just start your email list.
Thank you for listening to this week’s episode! I’d love to hear how your relationship with your body, social media, and the internet is feeling in the comments.

Next week Tuesday Nov 21 at 1pm EST I am teaching a class all about rolling in creative marketing hidden gems into your newsletters. It’s $55 or $27.50 for Skillshare members. It will be recorded if you can’t make it live but you’ll need to sign up before to get the recording. I’m feeling so excited for this class and to show you how marketing can be fun and a practice and not just a shitty thing you “have to do”.
A portion of November’s paid subscriptions goes toward the Palestinian Youth Movement

eeeee i love this conversation, i’m currently on a winter sabbatical with instagram: fall equinox - any time after the winter solstice, mainly because my seasonal depression kicks my ass and social media is not generative for me in trying to stay with life.
i love leaving instagram it makes me remember i’m a living body that life is slow and i can have big conversations and that all that energy can be used in 5,000 different ways and i can actually uncurl my back and drop my shoulders
i also love coming back to instagram knowing i will leave again it helps hold the reality that social media in general is not that deep- i love memes i love knowing where the parties and shows are and i also love not knowing a thing. i try to move towards it with less rigidity
just found your podcast and i love it! i love that you give so much space to your audience instead of a copy & paste mindset, it’s truly a slice of healing🕊️
i take a sabbath break from my phone, every sunday it lays dead, just to reset my mind and go offline and be fully present w family. lately that means mondays i am hop back on there in a little more chaotic, less constrained way, like okay what did i miss? i am trying to figure out my balance in that.
since listening to your podcast ive been keeping a log in my notes app about the times i am mindlessly pulling up instagram and what i see/feel.
i run a business page for a restaurant so deleting the app isn’t an option. i have app limit to an hour but i probably go thirty mins beyond that.
finding our emotional/ spiritual connection and demands of things is so good and i love how you highlighted that in a humble way.
thank u sm much love
